Family Health: Tips to Protect Kids’ Health in the New Year

Many parents want to know the best ways to protect children from germs that cause serious illnesses throughout the year, and especially in winter. Keeping your child healthy can prevent numerous absences from school, and serious medical complications that may require hospitalizations. Pathogens that cause illnesses are not the only concern for parents because there are other dangers that cause health problems for children. A parent must remain vigilant each day of the year to ensure children are safe.   Tip One: Routine Immunizations to Prevent Childhood Illnesses Modern medical science has made it easier to protect children from common illnesses including measles, chicken pox, and poliomyelitis. It is important to make sure your child’s immunization schedule is up-to-date to protect their health. Keeping track of each child’s records by maintaining a written … Read entire article »

Each family member has a role

Each family member has a role

Each family member has a role On any effective team, each member has specific roles.  In my family, the roles are typically distinctive, with some crossing over when the need arises.  With two young boys, my wife, dog, and I all with completely different preferences and personalities, our family is a well-oiled machine (not really)! With my oldest, 6-year-old son, the purpose seems to challenge his mother and I on an intellectual level.  His logic is nearly … Read entire article »

George Zimmerman, Trayvon Martin, and what scares me as a father

George Zimmerman, Trayvon Martin, and what scares me as a father I’ve been slow to formally address the Trayvon Martin tragedy on Real Men, Real Dads because it is so politically charged.  The media hasn’t helped, but it seems that everyone is taking sides on this horrible incident like it’s nothing more than a football game.  In all corners of my world… from the university to Facebook, from work to my social circles…  it was nearly impossible to hold an intelligent conversation about what happened. On one hand, some people were sure that George Zimmerman had it out for all black people and that Trayvon was an easy target.  Others seemed convinced that Zimmerman was well within his rights to suspect, pursue, and perhaps apprehend anyone he felt was suspicious in the … Read entire article »

The kind of thing that sneaks up on you…

The kind of thing that sneaks up on you… Yesterday, as finals approached and research papers were coming due, something else was sneaking up on me.  There were no scary boogeymen or, since summer is upon us, no creepy, crawly bugs.  No, this was something I should have seen coming a long time ago but I have been self absorbed. There are other people’s kids in my house all the time now. Jalen is six years old and finishing up his kindergarten year.  He’s made more friends in the last year than I think he has made in all previous years of his life combined.  When he has a birthday party now, strange people and their children are here.  When the weekend arrives, there are neighbor kids here. It happened gradually over time, … Read entire article »

How Halo Made Me a Better Parent

How Halo Made Me a Better Parent

How Halo Made Me a Better Parent Being a parent isn’t a cakewalk. It can be overwhelming, nerve wracking, frustrating and even dangerous. However, once you learn the rules of engagement, being a parent can be deeply satisfying. My own parents were constantly in my face; shoving parenting books and how-to manuals into my hands. My wife, of course, accepted these books with gratitude, but not me. I relied upon another source of truth and wisdom, … Read entire article »

Here is a sampling: Daddies Aren’t Supposed to have Beards My 3½ year old daughter has recently started making rather opinionated comments about daddy’s choice of apparel… and my hair cut… and my beard. If it’s starting at this age, what will she be saying when she’s a teenager? I hear you; “Be afraid. Be very afraid!” The Walking … Read entire article »
